3:10 to Yuma
(14A)
Synopsis: A rancher
(Christian Bale) struggles to support his ranch and family during a long
drought. Desperately needing money to build a well, he takes an assignment
to transport a notorious felon (Russell Crowe), in the hands of authorities,
to Yuma for imprisonment. But, once the two meet, the criminal tries to
tempt him with--in exchange for allowing him to escape--an offer of much
more money than the rancher ever expected, the result of a hidden loot.
Robert's Review
Yawn; please wake
me up when it's over. "3:10 to Yuma" was completely disappointing and boring
for me. It has some excellent actors that I really like (Christian Bale,
Russell Crowe, Alan Tudyk, etc.) but the story itself just couldn't hold
my interest. It started off really slow and stayed that way for 2 hours.
I was so completely bored that I almost got up and walked out after about
20 minutes, but I went with friends and decided to just sit there and muddle
through it. I may as well have taken a nap for those 2 hours, but I sat
there and watched the whole thing instead… hoping it would somehow become
exciting and fun… but it never did. I found most of the characters to be
really stupid, making the most idiotic decisions possible (especially the
so-called "good guys;" they were morons and let themselves be killed quite
easily). Overall, unless you're a hardcore Western fan, steer clear of
"3:10 to Yuma"… or bring a pillow.
All in all, I'd give
this movie 2 Boring Westerns (out of 5). Re-watch value: NONE (I'd rather
take a 2 hours hap at home).
Brett's Review
I have to admit,
it was good to see a modern western come out of Hollywood, even if it was
a remake of the 1957 version. I really liked this movie, I thought
Russell Crowe and Christian Bale did a fantastic job and had really good
chemistry. The story flowed in a positive direction and the plot
seemed to stay on track. I was really excited to see this movie and
I was not disappointed. I liked some of the old westerns and it was
good to see something cool. Overall It was a good movie to see in
the theatres and I wouldn't mind seeing it again. The movie reminded
me a lot of "Unforgiven".
Overall Rating: 4
Cowboys (out of 5). Re-Watch Value: High (A definite purchase on DVD.)
Trivia: (1) Continuity: When the stage coach is
ambushed, there are two men on the back using the Gatling gun. One of the
men is shot and thrown from the coach, but in a subsequent shot, you can
see two men on the back of the coach. (this same goof occurs in the 1957
version). (2) Continuity: At the beginning, when Dan's son lights a match
to see at night, the match burns very slowly and irregularly, varying the
burnt length. When he puts it out, only the tip is burnt despite it being
lit for about 60 seconds.
