Atonement
(14A)
Synopsis: In 1935,
13-year-old fledgling writer Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) and her family
live a life of wealth and privilege in their enormous mansion. On the warmest
day of the year, the country estate takes on an unsettling hothouse atmosphere,
stoking Briony's vivid imagination. Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), the educated
son of the family's housekeeper, carries a torch for Briony's headstrong
older sister Cecilia (Kiera Knightley). Cecilia, he hopes, has comparable
feelings; all it will take is one spark for this relationship to combust.
When it does, Briony - who has a crush on Robbie - is compelled to interfere,
going so far as accusing Robbie of a crime he did not commit. Cecilia and
Robbie declare their love for each other, but he is arrested - and with
Briony bearing false witness, the course of three lives is changed forever.
Briony continues to seek forgiveness for her childhood misdeed. Through
a terrible and courageous act of imagination, she finds the path to her
uncertain atonement, and to an understanding of the power of enduring love.
Robert's Review
"Atonement" is being
nominated for quite a few awards, however I always rate movies based on
their entertainment value, not their technical merits. Sure the cinematography
is really amazing and there were some exquisite long, continuous, sweeping
shots. However, that does not excuse that fact that "Atonement" was painfully
slow and boring for a good 3/4 of the movie. I almost fell asleep towards
the beginning because nothing was happening. Then I forced myself to stay
awake and after about another 30 minutes I almost got up and left because
STILL nothing was happening. I forced myself to sit through the entire
thing and when it was over I couldn't wait to get out of there. Some of
the stuff towards the end was pretty cool to see, but getting to that point
was so ridiculously boring that I honestly would've rather walked out,
went home and popped in a DVD of something else.
Overall Rating: 2 Atonements (out of 5). Re-Watch
Value: NONE (just too slow and boring).
