Blades of
Glory (PG)
Robert's Review
The world stage of
men's Olympic figure skating gets turned upside-down and set ablaze by
Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) in
this zany new comedy. Chazz is the rock star of men's figure skating. He's
a notorious ladies man and sex addict. Jimmy on the other hand was a child
prodigy in men's figure skating and spent his entire childhood training
and perfecting his technique. Both men had clashed in previous championships
and became longtime bitter rivals. Then one day, they ended up tying for
first place at the Olympics, but refusing to share in each other's spotlights,
they broke out into a huge fight that resulted in them getting stripped
of their gold medals and banned from the sport for life. Years later, Jimmy
discovers a small loophole in the rules that allows him to qualify for
pairs figure skating. When he happens to run into Chazz in his pursuit
of a partner, the bitter rivals form an unlikely alliance and together
they make history as the first male-male Olympic figure skating pair.
"Blades of Glory"
is very fun, but also very silly. Will Ferrell and Jon Heder have a very
distinct brand of humor, which some people find idiotic and others find
incredibly funny. Therefore, I'm sure that fans of Will Ferrell's and Jon
Heder's other movies ("Napoleon Dynamite," "Anchorman," and "Talladega
Nights,") will probably enjoy this movie a lot too. Personally, this brand
of comedy has always been hit or miss for me (sometimes it's so funny I
laugh until it hurts, while other times I almost fall asleep in my chair)
and that is why I usually rate these movies around 3 STARS (out of 5).
"Blades of Glory" was no exception... it has some great comedic moments,
but overall there was also a lot of really silly or really dull moments
that just didn't interest me... so I'm right in the middle again with this
review.
All in all, I'd give
this movie 3 STARS (out of 5). Re-watch value: MEDIUM
Brett's Review
Couples figure skating
will never be the same for me since seeing this movie. "Blades of
Glory" is a story about two rival figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels
(Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder), who goes ballistic in an
embarrassing no-holds-barred drag-out brawl at the world figure skating
championships. They then get stripped of their gold medals and banned
from the men's figure skating sport for life. Now, three and a half
years later, they've found a loophole that will allow them to compete:
if they can put aside their differences, they can skate together in pairs
figure skating.
Was this movie as
brain-dead, dumb, and stupid as it sounds? HELL YES!! This movie
is everything you would expect from Heder and Ferrell... a really stupid-funny
movie that requires no brain cells to understand or be entertained by.
The skating in the movie was just so-so (really nothing special) and the
story was interesting (more of an "I wonder what would happen if…" type).
The overall movie with the slapstick silliness, no-IQ-needed humor and
off-the-wall shenanigans from Heder and Ferrell was just the right amount
to make the movie OK.
Overall Rating: 2.5
Stars (out of 5). Re-Watch Value: Low (It's a cable or Netflix type of
movie)
