Death at
a Funeral (14A)
Synopsis: On the
morning of their father's funeral, the family and friends of the deceased
each arrive with his or her own roiling anxieties. The son, Daniel, knows
he will have to face his flirty, blow-hard, famous-novelist brother Robert,
who's just flown in from New York--not to mention the promises of a new
life he's made to his wife Jane. Meanwhile, Daniel's cousin Martha and
her dependable new fiancé Simon are desperate to make a good impression
on Martha's uptight father--a plan that literally goes out the window when
Simon accidentally ingests a designer drug en route to the service, leaving
him prone to uncontrollable bouts of delirium and nudity in front of his
potential in-laws. Then comes the real shocker: a mysterious guest who
threatens to unveil an earth-shattering family secret. As comedic mayhem
and unfortunate mishaps ensue on every front, it is now up to the two brothers
to hide the truth from their family and friends, and figure out how to
not only bury their dearly beloved, but also the secret he's been keeping.
Robert's Review
"Death at a Funeral"
is a dark British comedy that's surprisingly funny and entertaining. The
ensemble cast (most of whom I've never heard of) really worked well together
and the situational humor and subtle jokes were non-stop throughout the
entire movie… the pacing was excellent! Plus the movie was only 90 minutes,
so it just seemed to fly right by and left me very satisfied and happy
at the end. While I enjoyed all the performances, I think special attention
must be paid to Alan Tudyk. I don't want to spoil anything, but suffice
to say his character was given some Valium that wasn't actually Valium,
and so he plays a character that is high out of his mind during the entire
funeral! That must've been a fun role to play and he practically steals
the movie – he's so much fun to watch. Overall, I was incredibly pleased
with and surprised by how fun this movie was to see. I'd highly recommend
it to everyone who wants a good laugh.
All in all, I'd give
this movie 4 Valiums (out of 5). Re-watch value: MEDIUM (maybe again in
theaters, but definitely on DVD).
Brett's Review
I wasn't really too
sure about this movie going in, however by the end of it I could not stop
laughing. The humor and slapstick are pretty much what you would
expect from a British comedy. I thought the acting was well done
and they didn't overload it with so much slapstick that it took away from
the story. The plot was well done and really shows a typical dysfunctional
family no matter what country it comes from. The other thing I liked
is the movie wasn't terribly long it was over before I realized it and
I had laughed almost all the way thru. The audience reaction was
just as amusing as the movie itself, with most everyone laughing and giggling
almost all the way thru the movie. All in all, a fairly surprising
and delightfully funny movie that you should check out and watch.
Overall Rating: 3
Coffins (Out of 5). Re-Watch Value: High (I will absolutely purchase on
DVD.)
Trivia: This movie
was filmed in only 7 weeks.
