Failure To
Launch (PG)
Welcome to eye candy
chick flick heaven.
So the plot: guy
doesn’t want to leave home (he’s 30 something). Parents hire a ‘motivator’
to get him to realise moving out is a great idea. Cue Mss Sarah Jessica
Parker as the bait to lure him away from home. Complications ensue. You
know how this is going to end…
So on to the eye
candy. It’s like the producers sat down and said… Right I want to appeal
to the same audience as Sex in the City; so for women & gay men we
have: Matthew McConaughey (Tripp) with the Bradley Cooper (Kit) and Justin
Bartha (Ace). I know many people will just watch this film for Matthew
McC, so the others are for some going to probably be like discovering that
Kit Kat that has all its bars made of solid chocolate, no wafer in sight.
Yum! Yes, even as a straight guy I can appreciate the looks of these three.
So for the guys, don’t despair. There is eye candy for us too: Ms SJP of
course, playing Paula the ‘motivator’. However if she’s not your bag, and
to be frank she isn’t mine, you might just be enchanted, and somewhat smitten
with and by Zooey Deschanel, the suitably named (taking into my last ramble
on chocolate bars), Kit. She plays Paula’s rather loopy yet well meaning
flatmate.
I could write a whole
review just about Mss Deschanel. She is one of those people who genuinely
you can say the camera just loves. Not only does she have that simple beauty
of someone like Katharine Hepburn, she can act and has that gift of making
it look easy. She will go a long way. If you look at the films she is in,
on imdb, which are confirmed, in post production, or announced, you know
someone has spotted her. She is a joy. Right that’s enough of my
gushing.
The story line I
described earlier really doesn’t need much expanding. Comedy, pain (emotional
and physical) betrayal and love, of course, all take centre stage at times.
Look out for the vegetarian lizard that decides just for today its going
to be a man eater… or the dolphin that clearly is sick and tired of being
typecast as a ‘nice human friendly’ mammal, or where Kit has an interesting,
if a little misunderstood conversation, with a man selling guns in a shop.
All good solid bits of comedy.
While it will never
win any Oscars, it’s a fun way to spend an hour and a half and should be
enjoyed by one and all.
