Craig Ferguson
Actor's Spotlight

It’s not often that I will write about a television show, let alone a talk show, but if you’re a fan of the genre, have I got a winner to recommend for you!  In January of this year, Scottish actor, writer, producer, director, musician and composer Craig Ferguson took over the host position from Craig Kilborn on The Late Late Show.  I don’t know about you but although I’m not the best sleeper, I can’t stay up to watch The Late Late Show because it’s on from 12:35 a.m. to 1:35 a.m. on CBS (Cable 7 in Kingston)) and I have to get up at 6:30 a.m. for work, so I tape it.  Well, I have NEVER had this much fun watching a talk show in all my life, and I’ve watched my share of them.  There’s no disputing that Oprah is the Queen of daytime talk shows (I’m sorry but Ellen will never come close in my book), but as far as night time goes, no one comes close to being as hilarious or enjoyable to watch as the talented, irreverent Craig Ferguson.

Craig’s monologues at the beginning of each show are often so funny that I’ve found myself laughing out loud and snorting to boot!  I watched last night’s episode with my sister this evening and she’d never seen him before.  She laughed so hard that she spit her water out while drinking and it almost came out of her nose! Craig is a natural comedian, a great mimic and has a broad repertoire of accents other than his own Scottish brogue.  His impression of Michael Caine is particularly superb.
He talks about anything you can think of and because it’s The Late Late Show, he doesn’t have to edit himself too much which makes him all the funnier.  He’s a man’s man and a ladies’ man.  The 43 year old Glaswegian is 6’2”, handsome, sexy and hysterically humorous…what more could anyone want?

After his opening monologue he often reads emails from people who send him stupid questions.  He acts in some excellent skits that he also writes portraying political figures and enacting recent current events with outlandish humour.  There is an actor on the show who plays George W. Bush who is really funny too, especially if you’re not a fan of Dubya’s.  One day a week Craig hosts “A Cup of Tea and a Chat” and answers staged questions from the audience.  His signature schtick though has to be when he comes back from a commercial break he always welcomes the audience with crazy little witticisms like “Welcome back my wee tasty crumpets!” or “Welcome back my frisky little ponies!” or the one that really made me snort, “Welcome back my wee shaved hamsters!” with that Scottish burr.  Get your freak on Craig, ‘cause I love it!

Craig Ferguson starred in the excellent comedic films “Saving Grace” and “The Big Tease” and also played Drew Carey’s drunken boss Nigel Wick on “The Drew Carey Show” from 1996-2003.  Although he likes to downplay his talent as an actor, I totally disagree that he isn’t a very good one.  He’s great!  He is one of Britain’s leading comedians and has written and performed three albums of stand up comedy.  His self-deprecating humour is infectious and no subject in his own life is taboo.  He’ll discuss everything from his personal vacations, to his failed marriages, his lust for Beyoncé, and his past alcohol and drug addiction.  Nothing is sacred and that’s what makes him special.  As far as I’m concerned both David Letterman and Jay Leno are far past their prime and it’s time for them to hang up their hats because Craig Ferguson should be the one in the best time slot for late night talk shows.

Although The Late Late Show doesn’t often have A-list Hollywood guests, it does have some good ones and sometimes even great ones, depending on your personal taste.  There’s a musical guest with every show and like Oprah, a ton of commercials between segments, so that’s why it’s best to tape the show so you can just fast forward through them.  I have to admit that Craig often has trouble staying on track with the questions he asks his guests because if he’s not laughing, they are and neither of them can concentrate.  Sometimes he has trouble listening and not bringing the conversation back to him, but it doesn’t really matter who is a guest on the show to me because I’m not watching it for the guests, I’m watching it for Craig.  I predict he will one day win an Emmy for this stint and may just become the new undisputed King of talk shows in any time slot.
