| Just when you thought
2005 was filled with dark, merky sounds meet Toronto based All The Brightness.
Kevin Bailey (Bass Guitar), Nick Mazzei (Vocals, Guitar) and Pete Maniatis
(Drums) released their debut album Lost In The Soul Deposit and was a delight
for me to review.
Produced by Sean
Baillie and engineered by Darius Szczepaniak, Lost In The Soul Deposit
was recorded during late-summer of 2005 at Electric Machine Studios. The
talents of these two rock innovators rolled up their sleeves and created
one of the finest Canadian alt-rock albums of the year. The cd made it's
world debut on November 18, 2005 at the Toronto Sick Children's Hospitals
gala fundraiser Blanket Of Bliss and immediately drew rave reviews plus
a growing international fan base.
Ten clever tracks
written by All The Brightness. Ten inspiring messages that can easily captivate
any large venue or the intimacy of you and your iPod Nano. You won't find
computerized sampling on this baby; All the songs on the album can earn
a spot on any internet chart out there.
All The Brightness
kicks open the door of this album with the opening track "Soul Deposit"
that's filled with shiney guitar riffs and the staple vocal performance
of Nick Mazzei. You just know from this opener you're in for a fun filled
musical ride from Toronto's 'next big thing'.
"Beautiful Massacre"
has a great beat with the ear catching distinctive drums of Pete Maniatis.
The song has hints of inspired sounds from perhaps Green Day, Sum 31 or
Nickelback. Whatever drove the creative pen and delivery of this song,
it is one that offers a calm mid-tempo drive right into it's intense chrous.
All The Brightness
slows down the pace with their dazzling ballad "One Thing". The lyrics
are a clear and simple message. Mazzei's vocals totally own this song.
Kevin Bailey and
his heart pounding bass plus the bands flawless harmonies are heard on
"Come A Long Way". It's topped with a burning guitar solo making you feel
on fire and wanting more.
"Never You" is a
standout track from Lost In The Soul Deposit; it has all the right hooks
to garnish rock and campus radio airplay. One of their heavier driven songs
with great vocals and harmonies. This song is also the band's polished
debut video.
"Waiting" is another
fresh sound from Mazzei, Bailey and Maniatis. I love songs that are perfect
for getting out of the city to enjoy a long highway or country drive, anywhere...
destination unknown until we get there. This song does it for me; writing
this review during the bitter cold early-hours of the last day of January...
man, I can't wait for summer and this song will be part of it.
"Come A Long Way",
"Frozen", "Til It's Over" and "Blanket Of Bliss" are other not to be missed
selections on Lost In The Soul Deposit.
The album closes
with "When It All Made Sense". Fairly sophisticated from the other tracks
as it dabbles more into our emotions. It leaves you with a refreshing vibe
sensing so much more will come from this talented trio.
Modern Rock and Power
Pop genre terms are tossed around way too freely by 'music critics' like
day-old halloween candy; All The Brightness and their debut album Lost
In The Soul Deposit is a solid Rock album in it's sweetest form. Highly
recommended.
