| It’s
no big secret that the release of Napanee native Avril Lavigne’s third
album entitled “The Best Damn Thing” has left the punk rock princess’s
fans in complete and utter shock.
The
first single “Girlfriend” is a fun light-hearted sing along and after hearing
it even once you’ll be left singing “Hey Hey You You I Don’t Like Your
Girlfriend” whether you choose to admit it or not.
Except
for three slower songs including the single “Keep Holding on” which was
featured in the movie Eragon, the entire album is full of all different
kinds of up beat and enjoyable tunes that no doubt will make you want to
jump around and dance.
Yes,
her last album “Under My Skin” was heavy, dark, and more mature in the
sense of her sound, as well as her singing about the hardships of growing
up in the industry, and just life in general. However, in saying that,
this does not mean “The Best Damn Thing” went backwards by any means. Like
all of us human beings, we all change A LOT in life, and she’s merely in
a different place. She has not become immature; she’s just happy, newly
married and very in love. What’s wrong with wanting to share the fun she’s
having with the world?
The
thing I like most about this CD is that it’s empowering for young women.
In reading other reviews, I was amazed to see the amount of people taking
Lavigne’s confidence in the worst way possible. Okay, I will give them
the fact that some of her wording is a bit on the bratty side, but look
at her lyrics as a whole. Props to her for being 22 in the entertainment
industry, and still being confident with herself and her music despite
what nasty things people have to say about her.
As
a female I really respect the way she represents her feelings. When I personally
go through a horrible break up, I don’t want to listen to a bunch of depressing
music that’s only going to make me feel worse about myself. I want to listen
to somebody who is going to empower me and make me feel like I’m awesome
and it doesn’t matter what happened because I can do better anyways.
If
you are a cheerful person who likes feel good music that you can either
dance and sing to, or just chill and listen to it quietly in your room,
you won’t regret buying this album. And for those of you that are rebelling
against Avril and refusing to buy her album because you don’t like that
she’s changed, you’re missing out huge, because this album IS “The Best
Damn Thing”.
