Juno Award winners for Best New Group is the Kingston-born trio Bedouin
Soundclash, making their home in Toronto (close to a major airport for
world tours). Jay Malinowski (vocals, guitar), bassist Eon Sinclair (bass)
and Pat Pengelly (drums).
Produced
by Darryl Jenifer, Street Gospels released August 21, 2007 is the third
studio recording for Bedouin Soundclash. It's a full length follow-up to
their highly successful indie release Sounding a Mosaic (2004-05) and it's
ever popular single "When the Night Feels My Song".
This
new cd takes the band back to their indie roots of ska, reggae and dub
when they formed in 2000 while attending Queen's University delivering
a more relaxing collection of songs and stories. Joining the band on Street
Gospels is keyboardist Money Mark best known for his work with the Beastie
Boys and singer Vernon Buckley from the legendary reggae group The Maytones.
The
album opens with the catchy "Walls Fall Down"; musically and lyrically
Bedouin Soundclash have come of age by not taking a new direction but looking
back at where it all started. Very intelligent music.
Fans
of The Police will really enjoy "Until We Burn in the Sun" with it's outstanding
reggae-melody among other fine selections on this disc.
Jay's
beautiful voice shines on the ballad "12:59 Lullaby" that you may recognize
from an episode of the hit television series Grey's Anatomy,
"St.
Andrews" offers a uniquely different sound that I recommend for your must-listen-to
list. "Gunships" is a brilliant selection with it's beat and impressive
guitar playing.
Bedouin
Soundclash goes a cappella in "Hush". I just can't put my finger on it
but it fills me with a calming, spiritual-like sensation whenever I listen
to this. The cd ends with the crooner-like song "Hearts In the Night".
I'm
quite impressed with the direction Bedouin Soundclash have taken on Street
Gospels but mind you something old and wonderful from the past can become
something new and exciting today. Enjoy it!
