| The left-coast sound
is alive and well on Cory Woodward's debut, 6-track mini-album titled Princess
Of The Skies (2008). This Edmonton-born singer/songwriter moved to Vancouver
in 2005 and soon put together his band which includes Matthew Rogers, Dallas
Woodward, Weezee Brown and Gord Robert.
Cory Woodman's raspy
singing style is distinct with just a hint of a young Bruce Springsteen
or even Joe Cocker. Cory is years ahead of his time.
"Slipping Away" is
a standout selection on Princess Of The Skies with great lyrics that many
people will relate to; youth, innocence, it's all here. I'm really impressed
with the guitar playing and backing vocals on this song.
The uptempo "Remedy
Girl" really wails with the blues. That hint of Springsteen comes shining
through on the ballad "Turn To You" accompanied with it's soothing harmonies.
All six songs are
worthy of mention and when you hear them you'll know what I mean. Princess
Of The Skies is a formidable no fluff, no filler recording. Matthew Rogers
produced the disc with Cory and together they experimented with a variety
of arrangements that spawn it's rich, deep sound.
"CW Express" fans
will surely embrace this disc when it hits the streets on July 15, 2008
and I have no doubt he'll make many new friends along the way as he's touring
extensively with his band this summer. Excellent debut Cory!
