the commercial says "It's been a while coming" but you knew it was going
to happen. I am both happy and dissappointed in Guns N Roses having a greatest
hits album. I'm not saying they don't deserve one... hell they're my favorite
band ...but often a greatest hits album signals the end of a band's career.
Not always ...but often. Axl is apparently refusing to release the forever
forthcoming album of new GNR material Chinese Democracy beacuse he doesn't
want two GNR albums out in the same year. Hell Axl you released two at
the same time with the Use Your Illusions albums.
But
anyway ...the album is balanced out fairly equally. Three cuts from Appetite
For Destruction ("Welcome To The Jungle", "Paradise City" and ofcourse
"Sweet Child O' Mine"). Their acoustic hit "Patience" from Lies (there
was only four new tunes on the album after all ...and needless to say "One
In A Million" wasn't going to be included). Three tracks from Use Your
Illusion 1 ("November Rain", "Don't Cry (original)" and "Live And Let Die").
Four tracks from Use Your Illusion 2 ("Knockin On Heaven's Door", "Civil
War", "Yesterdays", and "You Could Be Mine"). Two tracks from The Spaghetti
Incident ? ("Since I Don't Have You", "Ain't It Fun") and a soundtrack
contribution (a cover of The Rolling Stones' "Sympathy For The Devil" from
Interview With A Vampire).
I'll
admit I'm a little dissappointed in this as a greatest hits. For one "Yesterdays"
is included from Use Your Illusion 2 but not "Estranged"? The Spaghetti
Incident? album wasn't exactly a smash ....plus it was all cover
songs. "Since I Don't Have You" wasn't a hit. "Ain't It Fun" while a kick
ass song wasn't even a single. GNR's rendition of "Sympathy For The Devil"
did very little for the band. Many fans didn't even know about it.
But
hey for those of you who think "they have a couple good tunes" I'm sure
you'll be happy enough. And for younger and newer fans this may be a good
introduction to the band for you. But for us hardcore gunners it falls
a few roses short of a bouquet.
