| After over a decade
of writing, recording, producing and lineup changes, Guns N' Roses is set
to release their 6th full-length album, "Chinese Democracy", on November
23, 2008. This release comes 15 years to the day after their previous studio
effort, a collection of punk and glam rock covers, entitled "The Spaghetti
Incident?".
The list of contributors
to "Chinese Democracy" is like reading a rock n roll "who's who" roll call.
Producers Mike Clink (Triumph, Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Megadeth,
and many others), Andy Wallace (Nirvana's "Nevermind"), Roy Thomas Baker,
Bob Ezrin and Sean Beavan have been credited as having added their touch
in the creation of this masterpiece. Musically, the list of benefactors
is no less jaw-dropping. With the likes of guitarists Brian May and Dave
Navarro, ex-Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach, and the enigmatic Buckethead
all offering collaborations, this album is raw, juicy and powerful. "Chinese
Democracy" has been long-anticipated by fans worldwide, and I'm positive
that they will not be disappointed!
Throughout the coming
and going of members from the roster, lead singer Axl Rose and keyboardist
Dizzy Reed have stuck together, and are the only remaining two members
of the original band. Rose belts out his trademark vocals as usual, with
a balanced mix of ballad-like high's and raunchy, in-your-face lows. He
has changed his look big time, forfeiting the kilts, tight shorts and headbands,
to sport a more modern (but no less badass) wardrobe. His performance has
evolved along with his look, and this is exemplified through memorables
such as "Catcher In The Rye" and "This I Love". Now, if any of you are
like me, you have your expectations of the lead guitar role previously
held by Slash. But, let me tell you, axe-men Robin Finck (ex-NIN) and Ron
"Bumblefoot" Thal definitely fill the big shoes that were left to walk
in! While ripping melodic and shredding solos reminiscent of Zakk Wylde
in the powerhouses "Shackler's Revenge" and title track "Chinese Democracy"
that will satisfy any metal guitar afficitionado's desires, they have the
dynamic creativity to throw out some Spanish classical guitar in "If The
World" and further show off diversity in the bluesy "Sorry". With Chris
Pittman on synthesizer, rhythm guitarist Richard Fortus, former "The Replacements"
bassist Tommy Stinson and drummer Frank Ferrer rounding out the rhythm
section, these masters of their respective instruments form a stellar team
you'll for sure want to catch live on their in-the-works 2009 tour!
Old school Guns N'
Roses fans and young modern audiences alike should really enjoy rockin'
out to all 14 tracks. Music has changed drastically over the years, and
it's awesome to see that with a solid mix of vintage G N' R style and contemporarily
relevant composition, these guys have definitely grown with the times.
